Matthias Voigt studierte von 2004 bis 2010 Mathematik an der Technischen Universität Chemnitz. Während dieser Zeit verbrachte er Aufenthalte am Moscow Aviation Institute in Russland, an der Universität Helsinki in Finnland und am Forschungszentrum Jülich. Anschliessend war er Doktorand am Max-Planck-Institut für Dynamik komplexer technischer Systeme in Magdeburg und promovierte 2015 von der Fakultät für Mathematik der Otto-von-Guericke-Universität Magdeburg. Während seines Doktoratsstudiums hat er auch einen Forschungsaufenthalt am Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences in New York absolviert. Zwischen 2014 und 2021 war er Forschungsassistent an der Technischen Universität Berlin, bevor er von 2019 bis 2021 eine W3-Vertretungsprofessur an der Universität Hamburg übernahm. Im Jahr 2021 wurde Matthias Voigt zum Assistenzprofessor mit Tenure Track an der UniDistance Suisse ernannt; seit Januar 2026 trägt er den Titel eines Ausserordentlichen Professors.
